Planned dams on Peru’s Marañón River, the hydrological source of the Amazon, would flood farms and caves containing ancient pictographs, block the path of migratory fish, and displace more than 1,000 villagers. By signing our petition and supporting Marañón Waterkeeper, you can help save this pristine wilderness.

If these dams are built, they would not only destroy the Marañón Canyon, which is deeper than the Grand Canyon, they would also irreparably harm the Amazon River.

Thankfully, there’s time to stop the dams before they’re built.

Odebrecht and Enel, the companies with contracts to build the first two dams, have not started construction. The environmental impact assessments for these first two planned dams, Veracruz and Chadin II, have expired. Since the assessments are no longer valid, the companies will not be able to deliver promised power by the contract deadlines in 2023. At that point, the Peruvian government will be able to cancel the contracts, stopping these dangerous projects before they’re built.

But the Peruvian government can and should begin reviewing the contracts now.

Peru’s President, Martín Vizcarra, has a chance, now, to save the majestic Marañón Canyon and begin planning for a future there that includes sustainable tourism and the protection of ancient rock paintings.

La construcción de centrales hidroeléctricas con represas en el cañón del río Marañón, la fuente hidrológica del Amazonas, inundaría campos de cultivo y cuevas que contienen pinturas rupestres, bloquearía la ruta de peces que migran por el río y desplazaría a mil pobladores de sus hogares. Si estas centrales hidroléctricas con represas se llegasen a construir, no solo destruirían el cañón del Marañón, el cual es más profundo que el Gran Cañón en Estados Unidos, también causarían daños irreparables al río Amazonas ya que evitaría el flujo de sedimentos.

Por suerte, todavía hay tiempo para pararlas antes de que se construyan.

Odebrecht y Enel, las empresas con contratos para construir las represas Chadín 2 y Veracruz, respectivamente, todavía no han comenzado a construirlas. Es más, los permisos ambientales para construir estas represas ya han perdido su vigencia así que las empresas no podrán generar la electricidad que prometieron para el 2023. Al cumplirse dicho plazo, el gobierno peruano podrá caducar estos contratos y parar estos peligrosos proyectos antes de que se construyan.

Pero dado que no podrán cumplir con sus obligaciones, el gobierno peruano ya puede comenzar a revisar estos contratos desde ahora.

El presidente de Perú, Martín Vizcarra, puede salvar el majestuoso cañón del Marañón y planificar su futuro con la finalidad de que incluya el turismo sostenible y la protección de pinturas rupestres y petroglifos.
